From the 16th to 19th century the terms spinet and virginal were often used interchangeably, and in England during that era any harpsichord was called a virginal. His compositions are distinguished by a beautiful flow of melody and by a mannerly treatment of the accompanying parts, which he is justly said to have liberated from the strict rules of counterpoint. In the 20th century, two broad approaches to harpsichord building emerged. Noticing features such as this really comes in handy when it comes to memorizing a piece. Chapter 1 of this book explores issues of narrative and spatial formations, in particular, the serial structures and serial-like motions that characterize contemporary media and culture.

In the following century, Fournier's Modles des Caractres (1742) continued the romaine du roi style, but adapted it for his own new age. As was the case with the seventeenth-century baroque, the current expression of the neo-baroque has literally emerged as a result of systemic and cultural transformations, which are the result of the rise of conglomeration, multimedia interests, and new digital technology. It is displayed at Galleria degli Uffizi, in Florence, Italy.

Lace jabots were still worn tied around the neck. A combination of neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque designs, Beaux-Arts architecture appeared during the 19th century, and was promoted by graduates of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris. Drastic changes of emotion in a text may inspire corresponding changes in the music. Music, like any of the Arts, can serve as a bridge or portal between the physical, emotional and metaphysical realities, altering the mood and/or consciousness level of the observer.

Classical philosophers talk within the composition by Raphael “The school of philosophy” surrounded by personalities of the Renaissance, where the spatial illusion represented shows a stunning three-dimensional depth. Of primary focus is the preeminent Italian artist of the period, Bernini. Closed forms are replaced by open structures that favor a dynamic and expanding polycentrism. The church was still very powerful and its influence was everywhere, yet the reformation brought a degree of freedom to religious thinking and some hymns which we recognise today were written in this period.

Prominent artists from this era include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Raffaello Sanzio.

How to tell baroque from rococo, according to Fowler: "The characteristics of baroque are grandeur, pomposity, and weight; those of rococo are inconsequence, grace, and lightness." Baroque music uses longer lines and stronger rhythms than does Renaissance. The etymological origins of the word "baroque" are debatable. This style in decorations got the epithet of Barroque taste, derived from a word signifying pearls and teeth of unequal size. [Fuseli's translation of Winkelmann, 1765] Klein suggests the name may be from Italian painter Federigo Barocci (1528-1612), a founder of the style.
