Not so--it's a rare individual whose morals don't derive from one or more cultural commonplaces [especially religion]. In clear language, and with an emphasis on the practical application of moral philosophical theory to contemporary life, Rachels provides a stimulating introduction to the field of moral philosophy. I have stated my impression that the religious right advocates such moral instruction in order to sneak their religion back into the schools.

These are distinct judgments requiring distinct justifications. (shrink) Jonny Anomaly (2014). The callousness of Kant's "fourth man" is comparable to that of Mr. "Smith" in the dilemma considered elsewhere. Yet making allowance for all such diversities, it may be said that the common voice of the race proclaims it to be right for a man to reverence his parents; to care and provide for his children; to be master of his lower appetites; to be honest and just in his dealings, even to his own damage; to show benevolence to his fellows in time of distress; to bear pain and misfortune with fortitude.

The significant flaw in equating morality with psychology, is that people frequently want what is not actually best for them, but is only what they think is best for them because they may disregard or be unaware of actual consequences and risks, or better alternatives for them to get what they might actually prefer if they knew better. Both seek to preserve equality between persons by giving to each person what is due. For men never elicited duty, but only a necessity of acting from a certain interest.

Divergences of moral norms as between Western and non-Western societies are largely due to variations in cultural traditions and to ecological, sociological, and other existential differences. Thus, the stalemate in normative ethics between conflicting theories prevents us from using a single decisive procedure for determining the morality of a specific issue. But, again according to UN sources (6), only 12% of that amount would be enough to provide basic care for all, to vaccinate every child, eliminate the serious forms of malnutrition, reduce the mildest ones, and supply the whole world with drinking water. Sometimes, doing the right this is also want we want to do for selfish or prudential reasons. Suppose the moral law requires us to do y. Suppose further that the doing of y also gives us what we want, viz., x, (if you want x then do y). Then the consequent of our peculiar Hypothetical Imperative (Do Y.) is identical with that of the Categorical Imperative (Do Y.). Such cases, Kant would say, demonstrate that the moral worth of an action depends on the motive behind the action and not the action in an of itself. So one might ask Did she do the right thing? Did her action conform to the CI? But more deeply, one might ask, did she do the right thing for the right reasons? If the latter, then not only did her she do the right thing, but her action had moral worth, according to Kant.

The riots in Detroit, among the worse of the 1960's, were ironically in a city where black unemployment and black poverty were unusually low. For example, someone formulating laws under the veil of ignorance might sincerely (but perhaps mistakenly) believe that in a free market system, one may rise or fall on one's own merit, and that anyone with initiative, normal intelligence, and a good work ethic will be able to be successful, no matter what one's starting point in the society.

The initiation of aggression is always wrong. A Companion to Ethics, edited by Peter Singer (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1991); A Companion to the Philosophers, edited by Robert L. The Journal seeks to promote lively discussions and debates for established academics and the wider community, by publishing articles that avoid unnecessary jargon without sacrificing academic rigour. Ethics are more a code of conduct set forward by the community. His question is not the same as Kant's question "What is my duty?" or the egoist/utilitarian question of "How can we be happy?"
