In 1754 the 39th Foot was deployed, as the first British Government troops, rather than East India Company mercenaries, to India. At the battle of Worcester, the Essex Trained Bands distinguished themselves by storming and capturing the stronghold of Fort Royal, then turning the guns on the Royalists in the city of Worcester itself. The Continental system provided armies with the means to organize their combat units administratively and tactically. For some it was a shock to the system, the first time they had left their homes and families.
